Until fairly recently, women were rarely seen at the forefront of the farming and ranching industry. You could find them in the background, behind the scenes, and usually not in decision-making roles. However, if you’ve had the chance to spend any amount of time on an Alberta farm in the last 100 years, it wouldn’t take you long to find out that they were at the heart and soul of nearly every operation. The many support roles that women have played on the farm have always been integral to sustaining farm operations through some of the busiest and most stressful times of the year.
It’s 2022, and we all know that women are capable of amazing things, especially when they are given opportunities to connect and support each other. This is especially true in agriculture, and we have some great examples of Alberta women advancing the agriculture industry. Women are consistently leading the pack in the regenerative agriculture movement, are often on the frontlines of education and extension, and are one of the fastest-growing demographics of first-generation farmers. Together, in partnership with Young Agrarians, we’ll learn a little bit more about what our panelists do, ask them questions about their experiences and learn how they’ve overcome some of challenging barriers.
